Perception is projection

So how are we all doing with keeping things simple? For those that did take up a NY resolution, how is it going? Some brilliant ideas from people on Twitter have emerged, along with recommended sites and so on so do please take a look.

How many of us lay awake at night  worrying about events and issues that have not occurred yet, or we perceive will be happening at some point in time yet with no proof? How many of us construct events that are so dire and dreadful and we spend many sleepless nights fretting about what might happen, when in reality there is no rhyme or reason for them ever coming into being yet we still worry as if they are already happening?
The old adage, making a mountain over a mill hill.
Sound familiar? Well you are not alone.

So what can we do about it?

As an NLP practitioner once establishing a presenting problem I will often ask questions to get to the root cause, and I will ask ‘what is the worst that could happen?’ Not only does this act as a reality check frequently helping a client to realise actually things are not that bad, it can help an individual realise what resources and abilities they already possess to deal with any given situation and how capable they are.

It could be argued our perceived worrying is in a way helping us to prepare ourselves, but at 3am in the morning worrying over an issue that has not happened or confirmed will happen this does not help!

Here are a few activities that can help you:
·         Write down the issue, the power of transferring an issue from thought to pen and ink is amazing. especially when read the following morning.
·         Write down the pros and cons of the issues
·         Jot down some solutions or resources, maybe where to find further details or support
·         Create an action plan

So if the power of the mind can create such perceived issues with dramatic impact, imagine if you could use this power to perceive and achieve what it is you want....

In NLP one of our key beliefs is perception is projection: you imagine what it is you want to achieve and believe and act as if you are already there.

So take a moment, close your eyes, imagine what it is you want to achieve, maybe a promotion, to lose weight, stop smoking,  do better at a sport, it could be anything.

Now imagine yourself doing that chosen goal, note what you will see, hear, feel, smell, make it bright and colourful and really engage with yourself in that scenario at total perfection and doing what it is your want.

Repeat this as often as you desire, making it compelling and real, achievable and positive as if it is already what you do now.

Hearing yourself saying oh I can’t do that? Well it is no different from perceiving an issue that has not already happened yet, but you act as if it has or will be. As I mentioned earlier, that issue that keeps you awake is proof that you have this power – only this time you are harnessing that ability and power to achieve what you want, using your own mind to perceive and construct and communicating with it to project it.

Keeping it ‘real’ is vital but who knows what anyone can achieve once they engage and excel with their dreams and desires.
